These days there are many people who are looking for a convenient way to eat healthier and save money at the same time. Preparing food at home is like an art and it should be done with involvement. Whether you are traveling or at work, trail mix is easy to prepare and nutritious treat to hand.
My homemade trail mix recipe only requires five components,
- Brazil nuts (1 oz), walnuts (1 oz),
- dried cranberries (1 tablespoon),
- dark chocolate (15 g or 16 chips), and
- coconut flakes (1 tbsp).
Not only for a tasty and satisfying mix of salty and sweet things, but can also improve your health in the following ways:
- a) Brazil nuts can reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, triglycerides and promotes healthy blood circulation,
- b) walnuts was recently shown to improve a specific form of cognitive function, known as “empirical verbal argument”
- c) cranberries blunt glucose and insulin responses when eaten with other carbohydrates, including sugar
- d) dark chocolate may reduce systemic inflammation that is associated with many conditions, from cardiovascular disease chronic fatigue syndrome
- e) according to recent scientific studies, coconuts are “antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiviral, anti-parasitic, anti-dermatophytic, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective and immuno stimulant” Properties.
Of the five ingredients are coconut probably the most controversial because of its saturated fat content.
Over the past few years, peer-reviewed study refutes the idea that refined coconut oil raise cholesterol, otherwise it may damage the cardiovascular system. But there is a warning of his earlier statement: eat a diet rich in saturated fats and carbohydrates can actually create unwanted increases in LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides. Fortunately, my recipe is relatively low in non-fiber carbs and even lower with respect to its glycemic load.
